The call came in at 7:42 on a Thursday night. I was closing out the warehouse system when the buyer from a stone fabrication shop said, 'We need IPG by Saturday.' She didn't say which IPG.

The client's specialty is hand and stone: hand-finished stone panels for high-end kitchens, bathrooms, and commercial lobbies. They were shipping a display to a national stone and tile expo, and the display frame was made of foil board. If you don't work with it often, foil board is a rigid panel with a metallic face. It's great at reflecting heat and resisting moisture. It's also terrible for tape. Most adhesives won't grip the foil, because the surface is too smooth and too slick.
The buyer said IPG like it was one word. In my world, IPG means tape—Intertape Polymer Group, the company that makes the double-sided tape we stock in dozens of widths. But the client's engineering team had recently bought an IPG laser marking machine to engrave serial numbers on stone samples. And their spec sheet for the display mentioned an IPG thulium fiber laser for cutting the foil board panels. Three different products, same three letters, one very dangerous abbreviation.
Normal turnaround for the tape was three days. We had 36 hours. If the display didn't show up at the expo on Monday morning, the client faced a $50,000 penalty clause. That changes how you listen to a phone call.
At first, I thought the order was straightforward. 'We need the two-inch double-sided IPG, 18 rolls.' I grabbed the roll code from memory. Then the buyer forwarded the purchase order for approval. The line item said 'IPG laser marking machine' at the top. I nearly said, 'Wrong department.' No, I did say it—under my breath. But I didn't cancel.
Here's the thing about a rush order: most people go straight to pricing and shipping, and completely miss setup fees, revision costs, and the freight charges that can add 30-50% to the total. So I called the client's lead installer, not the buyer. He confirmed the tape. What surprised us was the address.
According to USPS (usps.com), a First-Class Mail large envelope starts at $1.50. That wouldn't help us; the foil board crates were far too thick for a flat mail piece. Even the large envelope maximum thickness of 0.75 inches was nowhere near enough.
The client approved the courier cost. The tape left our dock at 3:20 a.m. The courier's delivery window was 5:30-7:30 a.m. At 6:50, my phone rang. 'I'm at the wrong address.' He had gone to the old shop location because the service address on the label was the one from 2023. The installer was at the new location, ten minutes north. He made it by 7:12 a.m.
That's the lesson hiding inside the panic. The adhesive worked on foil board because it was a high-tack acrylic with a thicker coat than most. It filled the microscopic texture of the foil. It stuck. The installation crew had the display assembled by 9 a.m. By noon, it was crated and on the truck to the expo.
Looking back, I should have asked for the product code in the first ten seconds of the call. At the time, the buyer said 'IPG' with so much confidence that I didn't question it. That seems silly now, but in the middle of an emergency, confidence reads as correctness. I've learned to trust the document, not the tone.
Our company policy now requires a line-item spec or a photo of the label on any order over $500. We also add a 48-hour buffer to anything called a 'rush.' We didn't use to do that. In 2020, a phone call was enough. That's not the case anymore. The fundamentals haven't changed—you still need the right product, in the right quantity, at the right time. But the execution has to be more precise, because there are more handoffs, more vendors, and more acronyms than ever.
To be fair, the buyer wasn't being careless. She had sent the PO before the call; I just hadn't opened it. If I had, we'd have saved a lot of stress. Now we have a shared folder for every rush project, and the first document in it is the original PO.
One more thing. That same week, someone emailed a support address asking how to turn off liquid glass. I still don't know what that question was about, or why it landed in our inbox. But it reminded me that people search with fragments, and those fragments don't always mean what you think they mean. The phrase 'IPG' is no different. Before you place an order, clarify the exact machine, material, or manufacturer. Because in a rush, the wrong assumption is the most expensive thing you can ship.
