Last November, I got an internal email from a sales rep. It said: “Customer wants an IPG device. Six units. Need a product code before 2:30.”
I’m the quality/compliance manager at IPG. I review product specifications before they reach customers—roughly 200 product requests a year, give or take. I rejected about 11% of first-pass submittals in 2024 because the specification didn’t match what we could actually verify. That email wasn’t a bad spec. It was no spec.
I wrote back and asked what they were sealing. The answer was “boxes.” I asked whether they wanted manual, semi-automatic, or automatic. The rep didn’t know. I asked for a carton size range and a line speed. Nothing. The customer needed a product code by 2:30, and I had less than two hours to help them avoid an expensive mistake.
From a packaging-industry standpoint, an IPG device is not one product. It can be a manual water-activated tape dispenser, a tape head that mounts on an existing case sealer, a semi-automatic carton sealer, or a fully automatic line. Same brand. Same generic word. Different jobs, different costs, and different spec sheets.
It’s tempting to think the answer is simpler than that. “IPG is IPG, right?” No. A tape head is the mechanism that applies and cuts tape. A dispenser holds a roll and helps you use it by hand. A case sealer is the larger frame that positions the carton while the head does its work. Those all get described as “devices.” They are not interchangeable.
I should also clear up one thing before the comments: there are other IPGs. IPG Photonics, for example, makes fiber lasers. That’s a different company in a different field. I’m only talking about the packaging and tape side of the IPG world. The same principle still applies, though: generic words are not enough.
Back to the email. The six “devices” turned out to be retrofittable tape heads. The customer had several existing case sealers from another manufacturer, and they wanted to run water-activated tape instead of their current pressure-sensitive tape. They didn’t need six full machines. They needed six heads that would fit their frames, handle the roll weight, and apply consistent brush pressure.
That distinction does not come from the phrase “IPG device.” It comes from details. A water-activated tape head needs a different tape path than a head designed for pressure-sensitive tape. Double-sided tape brings its own variables—liner release, adhesive thickness, temperature. The right equipment depends on the tape. And the right tape depends on the box, the pack speed, and the storage conditions.
I asked the customer for photos and any model number printed on their existing sealer. The purchasing manager laughed. “You don’t know which device we need?” he said. It wasn’t an unfair question. To someone outside the industry, a tape head just looks like a box with rollers. But the mounting hole spacing, the brake tension, and the cutoff mechanism all have tolerances. If they are wrong, the tape curls, skews, or snaps at the worst possible moment.
We found a workable head. Then we hit a delay: the mounting adapter for their older frame was backordered. A supplier offered a generic bracket that looked identical and would ship in two days. The customer asked why we weren’t using it.
I went back and forth for most of an afternoon. On paper, the generic bracket made sense. My gut said test it before promising an installation date. We ran fifty cycles on a spare frame, and the bracket flexed enough to shift the tape path by about an eighth of an inch. That doesn’t sound like much. It was enough to make the tape land crooked on shorter cartons.
That small test changed the conversation. The purchasing manager told me later, “I should have asked what the retrofit involved before the PO went to approval.” I appreciated that. It wasn’t a tape quality failure. It was an assumption failure.
In quality work, I’ve learned to ask “What’s not included?” before I ask “What does it cost?” A transparent quote lists the mounting bracket, the safety interlock change, and the test run. The cheaper quote often leaves those details for later. A lower price on the head can disappear once you add freight, downtime, and an installation call.
The tape industry has standardized tests for a reason. For pressure-sensitive tape, peel adhesion is often measured using methods like PSTC-101 or ASTM D3330. Those tests exist because “strong” and “heavy-duty” are not specifications. The same logic applies to the equipment around the tape. You can’t test quality into a line after the machine is bolted in place.
So if you ask me what an IPG device is, here is what I need to know before I can help:
Those questions aren’t a way to slow you down. They are the whole job. An IPG device is the right device only when it matches the tape, the carton, and the conditions around them.
