The IPG Double Sided Tape Failure That Wasn’t

Quick note: if you landed here because you were searching for IPG laser repair, this isn’t the article you want. That’s a different IPG. I’ve got nothing useful to say about laser optics, and honestly, I have no idea why a tape company and a laser company ended up sharing the same three letters. My IPG is the tape one—Intertape Polymer Group. I review IPG double sided tape before it ships to distributors. And I have a story about a product complaint that almost turned into a mistake.

I’ve been a quality/compliance manager for a building materials company for about four years. I review roughly 200 unique tape lots a year. In Q1 2025, I rejected 1.8% of first production runs for coating or liner defects. So when a distributor called to say our tape “doesn’t stick,” I didn’t take it personally. I took it as a puzzle.

The call

The call came on a Thursday in March. A distributor had ten rolls of IPG double sided tape returned by a contractor. The tape, the contractor said, was not holding. The job was a bathroom remodel: he was installing a frameless shower door, and he’d also used the tape to hold a drilling template for the new bathtub faucet. He had followed a “how to install bathtub faucet” video that recommended taping the template to the tile. The tape kept falling off the tile.

“It won’t stick. The whole shower door project is stuck waiting on this.”

Before I called it a defect, I wanted to understand the story. Because a returned roll isn’t just a roll. It’s a missed deadline, an unhappy contractor, maybe lost trust.

The lab result

I set up the standard peel adhesion test: ASTM D3330, 180-degree peel on stainless steel. I also ran a holding-power check per ASTM D3654. Results within spec. Liner release was smooth. Coating was uniform. I pulled archived samples from the same production lot and retested at 23°C and 50% relative humidity, then at 30°C. Same result. I checked lot history, coating thickness records, and warehouse storage conditions. Nothing pointed to a manufacturing issue. In the lab, that tape was doing exactly what it was supposed to do.

At that point, the easiest move would have been to close the complaint as “application error.” In my first year doing this, I actually made that mistake. I approved a roll because the numbers looked good and I didn’t think about the job site. That lesson came back when a customer sent photos of tape curling off a sun-heated wall. I still wince when I think about it.

So I asked for the contractor’s number. That’s not something I always do. But the distributor said the contractor was close to switching suppliers, and I wasn’t ready to defend a lab report while a customer was staring at a wall of tile.

The job site

The bathroom was half torn apart. The old faucet was out. The shower door track sat in a box. And on the counter, next to a box of drywall screws, was a bottle of adhesive remover.

He pointed to the tile where the template had been. The tape came off clean, which almost made it worse. If it had torn or stretched, I’d have said the adhesive was aggressive enough. It just didn’t bond.

“I prepped the tile,” the contractor said. “Cleaned it with this.”

He told me he’d used the adhesive remover because he already had it on the truck. Saved a four-dollar purchase and a trip to the hardware store. In exchange, it cost him a morning of rework.

That bottle explained everything. Adhesive remover dissolves old adhesive, but it leaves a thin, invisible film on non-porous surfaces like tile (you can’t see it, but tape can). If you don’t wipe that film off with isopropyl alcohol and let the surface dry, pressure-sensitive tape is not sticking to tile. It’s sticking to the film. And that film doesn’t hold.

The real problem

Here’s the causation reversal I keep seeing: people think the tape failed because the tape is cheap or defective. Actually, the cleaning step failed because the surface was prepped wrong. The tape did its job—stuck to whatever it was touching. The problem was what it was touching.

The assumption is that “clean, dry surface” is self-explanatory. The reality is that clean means different things in different trades. A painter’s surface can tolerate a little residue. A pressure-sensitive adhesive can’t. If you ask me, every tape datasheet should include a line about which cleaning products to avoid.

What changed

To be fair, our label did say “clean, dry surface.” I had written that line myself. It was true. It was also useless. A contractor with a busy day can look at a bottle of adhesive remover and genuinely believe that’s how you clean. If we don’t spell out the “don’t use adhesive remover as the last cleaning step” part, we’re leaving the most important instruction to luck.

We replaced the ten rolls of IPG double sided tape. Then I added a warning to our job-site instructions: “Do not use adhesive remover as the final cleaning step. Wipe with isopropyl alcohol and let the surface dry.” Three sentences. It hasn’t killed us to be a little more explicit.

The warning is now on the product page, too. If you search for IPG double sided tape, you’ll see it before you buy: “For best results, clean with isopropyl alcohol. Do not use adhesive remover as a final cleaning step.” It’s a small change. It prevented a repeat of the same call.

The contractor wiped the tile with alcohol, waited five minutes, and reapplied the tape. The template stayed. He finished the frameless shower door and the bathtub faucet install that afternoon. The distributor kept the account. I still have that contractor’s number saved.

The lesson I keep repeating

I still kick myself for almost closing that complaint as “not our problem.” The tape measured fine. The failure was real. Both things were true. If I’d stopped at the lab result, we would have lost a contractor and learned nothing.

I have mixed feelings about the phrase “operator error.” On one hand, the tape wasn’t defective. On the other hand, if a customer can fail without a warning, the packaging has a defect too. The product and the instructions are a system. We were only looking at half of the system.

So what’s my rule now? I review labels and data sheets as seriously as I review coating weights. Before I approve a batch, I ask: what’s the thing someone will do wrong? If the answer is “use adhesive remover right before applying tape,” the label needs to say that.

Not every returned product is defective. But every returned product is evidence. Sometimes the evidence points at the product. Sometimes it points at the instructions. And once in a while, it points at a four-dollar bottle of adhesive remover and a clean-looking tile.
